P2i Ion-Mask Coating to Waterproof Cell Phones

In England, the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory has developed Ion-Mask, a compound that invisibly bonds to surfaces and allows them to repel water and dust. The compound was developed initially for the military for use on uniforms during chemical warfare, and a spin-off company, P2i, is in talks with mobile phone manufacturers about using the coating on handsets.

Mobile phones are difficult to waterproof currently due to the need to seal them off. Such seals are not always easy to apply to small devices. Ion-Mask is an invisible coating that can safely be used to seal the exterior of a device, as well as the internal components. Ion-Mask is bonded to the surface of the cellphone using gas that has been electronically charged.

Three major handset manufacturers are in talks with P2i to use the compound on future devices, though no commercial availability has been announced.
